Eight Northern California Sheriff’s Offices gathered at Travis Air Force Base on Thursday, May 29, 2025, for the California State Sheriffs’ Association’s 1st Annual BBQ Cook-Off, a spirited event celebrating service and camaraderie.

The idea sparked from a friendly BBQ rivalry between (now former) Solano County Sheriff Thomas Ferrara and Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes, which quickly expanded into a community-focused competition honoring those stationed at Travis AFB.
“If we’re going to cook all this food, why not cook for those who serve?” said Sheriff Barnes.

Sheriff’s Office teams served free BBQ to Airmen, base personnel, and local attendees, all while competing for top honors. Special guest judges, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Adam Housley, and Food Network’s Chuck Matto evaluated entries based on flavor, presentation, and creativity.

Competition Results
Best Ribs — Yuba County Sheriff’s Office
Best Chicken — Solano County Sheriff’s Office
Best Beans — El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office
Overall Champion — San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office
Beyond the trophies and friendly rivalries, the day emphasized unity, appreciation, and community connection.
“We’re dedicated to our communities and our country,” said Sheriff Barnes. “This event brought us all together.”

The success of the first-ever BBQ Cook-Off marks the start of a tradition that brings together law enforcement, military members, and the communities they proudly serve.
